The Level 3 Sport and Physical Activity course aims to develop students’ knowledge, understanding and skills of the principles of Sport and Physical Activity, through applied learning. The course itself is intended to lead students into a range of roles in sport and physical activity sector.

Students will complete three mandatory units which are:

Unit1: Body systems and the effect of Physical activity (External Exam)

Unit 2: Sports Coaching and Activity Leadership

Unit 3: Sports Organisation and Development (External Exam)

They will then complete two or three other units which will focus on more specific elements of Sport and Physical Activity such as Organisation of Sports Events or Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation. 

Assessment for students takes the form of internally assessed pieces of work/assignments (other than the two examined units) of which evidence can come from a number of sources such as task based activities or projects to observation of practice and witness statements. Pupils are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and must satisfy all criteria to achieve either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.


This qualification can obviously be used to help students gain access into University for a range of degree courses and is the equivalent to an ‘A’ level.  It is however, particularly useful and appropriate for those students who intend to go on to study Physical Education, Sport Science, Leisure or Leisure Management in some way at University or Colleges or Higher Education. The qualification has had the support from a range of employers such as Sports Coach Uk, Youth Sports Trust, British Athletics, RAF School of Physical Training, The Tennis Foundation and Badminton England to name a few. They have the support of several universities such as Durham, University of Worcester, Leeds Trinity as an example of a few, this is by no means an exhaustive list.
